Those Left Behind

Winner of the award for Best Directing (Documentary Short) at the Sayville International Film Festival — “Those Left Behind” A Film by Jacob Campbell

Inspired by the discovery of a 2006 oral history of the filmmaker’s grandparents, “Those Left Behind” explores the complex dynamics of a family recovering from the loss of their wife, mother, and daughter in the 9/11 attacks. Using home movies and new interviews, the film charts a family’s life over the 25 years since the attacks, the difficulties of navigating individual responses to a collective tragedy, and the trials of a son grieving a mother he doesn’t remember. With an intimate, personal take on a world historical event, “Those Left Behind” presents a new way to view the painfully familiar.
